Everyone knows the significance of the lighthouse itself. For hundreds of years, lighthouses have been used to help ships safely navigate harbors and areas where the land may come out into the water in times of bad weather and poor visibility. Today many lighthouses are merely pieces of history that stand as a memento to times gone by.
When people go on vacation to an area where lighthouses are common, many times they will return with a souvenir statue (or something of that sort) to remind them of the area. Many times, since the lighthouses were the main attractions of the areas, they return with a small replica of the lighthouses they may have visited. There are a variety of lighthouse collectibles that a person can find. There are lighthouse bird feeders and birdhouses, figurines of the lighthouses, clocks, prints, plates, key chains, candles and lighthouse stained glass pieces.
People begin their lighthouse collectibles collections by finding a unique piece or by just liking the way the collectible looks in the store or gift shop. Many times this leads to a type of collection that brings great joy to each person who views their collection. These are pieces to be displayed and shared with others in your home. When you start your collection you may intend to continue with one or two more pieces, or you may build your collection to many more pieces. There are many types of lighthouse collectibles that you might like to choose from.
Lighthouse miniature statues are common as they do not take up a large amount of space and many can be displayed all at once. They usually range in size from two inches up to six inches for the miniature versions but other sizes can be found that are larger and more detailed. The next type that is widely found are pictures of the various lighthouses. These can range from actual professional photographs to paintings done by local artists.
Lighthouse collectibles such as bird feeders and bird houses provide an outdoor display of your collection. These will normally be much larger in size and can be very detailed or can be rudimentary depending on the style you choose. Additionally, outdoor landscapes can be made using a lighthouse as a base which may or may not be equipped with a light inside and usually some form of water fall or pool is places at its base. These are very beautiful to view especially in the evening hours when the light is shining on the water.
Lighthouse collectibles usually have special meaning to their owners. They may be purchased at each vacation spot with the family or they may be purchased when on a special trip with friends. Additionally they could be purchased by others for the owners as gifts. Many people appreciate the beauty of the lighthouse and therefore there are many collectors around the world. Regardless of the reason for the collection there are many items always available to add to the collection. While there may be a limited number of lighthouses still in existence today their memories still live on through these various collections… even after the lighthouses themselves may no longer be used. If you visit the various lighthouses around the country you will find that only a handful are still operational today. However their buildings are still available for tours in most cases, and you will be able to get a fabulous view from the upper levels.
When traveling to the various lighthouses remember that these were made during times when elevators were not in existence yet. Many lighthouses today still use the same system to reach the top which involves many stairs and sometimes just ladders!
