Like many other functioning lighthouse along the coasts, the building is maintained by the United States Coast Guard. The building went through a series of repairs in order to keep it in working order and preserve its historic nature. The building benefited from the National Lighthouse Preservation Act. There are many community and governmental efforts to keep the building up and running. Visitors can stop by the Thomas Point Lighthouse during the day and take a tour.

Many people expect lighthouses to be a lone tower on a rocky point. While there is certainly a light in a high spot, the Maryland Thomas Point Lighthouse does not fit this definition. There is a large complex that houses the equipment, the people who run the lighthouse, and store any equipment that the operator might need.
When a visitor comes to the Maryland Thomas Point Lighthouse he can see why the tower on a low point is not needed. The rocky shoal already rises into the air. The base of the lighthouse can easily be seen by most of the ships that pass through the area. The building, like many of its brothers and sisters around the world, keeps the wheels of commerce flowing smoothly.
The Maryland Thomas Point Lighthouse may not be one of the seven wonders of the world, but it is part of the nation’s maritime heritage. People who pass through the Annapolis area should not pass up the chance to visit the building. They can also visit other interesting areas in the Chesapeake Bay area. A visitor can even see the mouth of the Susquehanna River, assuming that he is interested in seeing the end of one of the world’s largest non-navigable rivers. There are plenty of other sites to see in the area.
Maryland is known for many things. Baltimore has historic charm and it makes great clam chowder. At least the residents will swear they have the best clam chowder. People in other parts of the country do not worry about who has the better chowder. They have their own regional delicacies. Pennsylvania residents can sample the Pennsylvania Dutch delicacies and residents of Louisiana can sample Cajun dishes. The Maryland Thomas Point Lighthouse is one of the most recognizable lighthouses on the East coast!
