South Carolina Hilton Head Lighthouse was built in 1891 and just seven years later a hurricane hit this area. The lighthouse keeper resided there with his daughter. The keeper was working hard to keep the light burning for the ships when the hurricane tore through the lantern room and blew the light out. This caused the lighthouse keeper to suffer a fatal heart attack. He did not die until he had urged his 21 year old daughter to relight the lantern and keep it burning for the ships. The daughter got through the ordeal but also passed away three weeks later from the stress the awful ordeal had caused. Since this happened, there have been numerous sightings of the keeper and his daughter along with the what sounds like weeping and sobbing.
Hilton Head Lighthouse was a lookout tower during WW II. It has been equipped with many safeguards.
